Get on the Bus, or Under It

You know it’s an election year when the Democrats quietly scrub gays and lesbians from the platform:
2004: “We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families.”
2008: “We support the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, and support equal responsibility, benefits, and protections.”
Oh, the word “all” will be spun–in some circles–as universality, but in an age when so few Democratic leaders dare to muster support for anything more than artificial civil unions, and advocating for same-sex marriage is the kiss of death, this is a sacrifice. I’m not persuaded by the later sentence in the 2008 platform:
We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts to use this issue to divide us.
So where’s same-sex marriage? Or is the party supportive of only certain families?
