CODE PINK protestor Desiree Farooz and friend

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was faced with a little symbolic comeuppance today, courtesy of CODE PINK protestor Desiree Farooz:

Rice was preparing to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee when she encountered Farooz inside the hearing room. Farooz had painted her hands red, apparently to symbolize her group’s claim that members of President Bush’s cabinet have blood on their hands because of the way they’ve waged war in Iraq.

It looks as though Secretary Rice was made momentarily uncomfortable, symbolizing the misery of millions for which she shares responsibility. The White House knows a threat when it sees one, of course, and the hapless Press Secretary was even less coherent than usual in her response:

The White House reacted harshly Wednesday after a protester at a House hearing got close enough to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to put her dyed hands in Rice’s face.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, referencing the incident and calling it “despicable,” said it “seems that, increasingly, Congress is being run by Code Pink.”

Perino, typically, has it exactly wrong. The war goes on precisely because Congress doesn’t listen to CODE PINK or like-minded protestors.
