2006: the Year in Hate Speech
Posted on | December 23, 2006
Media Matters has published its list of this year’s best howlers from the radical right. It’s all there, from John Gibson’s call for more white babies to Glenn Beck’s plea for nuclear holocaust in Iran. Limbaugh takes it a step further, consigning the entire Middle East to fiery destruction, in a sort of wingnut’s version of cut-and-run. His “slaughter the cow to get the butter,” however, is pretty freakin’ funny. And it wouldn’t be the holiday season without our fondly recalling at least one death threat from Ann Coulter, would it? That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
Next to all the violent imagery in their speech, the merely bigoted looks almost innocuous. The far right: lowering the bar in American discourse for two centuries.
