I believe that none of the doppelgangers spoke, except perhaps for Asha's, which managed to cast a spell? They weren't merely combat golems. Strange's double was using the pseudo-psionic monk ability (Body Equilibrium) to emerge from the mud---just not quite quickly enough! Strange is usually on a defensive footing. He defeated the doppelganger, I believe, by going offense (and burning thirteen levels of spells), even though we kept losing initiative. A couple of more points to add…
